Exercise at the cellular level

What is PEMF therapy?

Scientifically speaking, Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field Therapy is a non invasive treatment which applies a magnetic field to the cells within the body by using an electromagnetic impulse at a pre-set frequency with variable intensities. The impulse interacts with the ions present within specific cells, accelerating activity and expediting the flow of oxygen and nutrients. When applied to injuries, PEMF Therapy can assist in both kick-starting and boosting the healing process at a cellular level, while simultaneously accelerating the disposal of toxins and waste products.

In fact, the therapeutic benefits of PEMF have now been so well documented that the space administration NASA recently dropped over $3.5 million in PEMF research, with a vision to utilize the treatment to reverse the bone loss experienced in astronauts following extended periods of time in gravity-free environments. In 2009 NASA was awarded the patent for PEMF use to enhance tissue repair in animals. Ultimately the space administration concluded PEMF to be successful in the repair of damaged tissue, noting the following in their report:

“One may use this electrical potentiation for a number of purposes, including developing tissues for transplantation, repairing traumatized tissues, and moderating some neurodegenerative diseases and perhaps controlling the degeneration of tissue as might be effected in a bioelectric stasis field.”

What are the benefits of PEMF Therapy for my horse?

  • Pain Relief

PEMF therapy is known for its effectiveness in reducing pain associated with chronic conditions like arthritis and injuries. By promoting blood flow and reducing inflammation, it helps alleviate discomfort in horses, allowing them to return to their regular activities.

  • Improved Circulation

One of the primary benefits of PEMF is its ability to enhance circulation. Better blood flow increases the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissues, facilitating healing and overall health.

  • Faster Recovery

Horses often face injuries or surgeries that require time to heal. PEMF therapy can speed up recovery by promoting cellular repair and regeneration, helping horses heal quicker.

  • Reduced Muscle Tension

Tight muscles can lead to stiffness and discomfort. PEMF helps relax tight muscles, improving flexibility and reducing the risk of strains during training or competition.

  • Enhanced Performance

By improving circulation and reducing muscle fatigue, PEMF therapy can enhance a horse’s performance in various disciplines. Horses often exhibit greater stamina and agility after treatment.

  • Stress Reduction

Traveling, competing, and training can be stressful for horses. PEMF therapy has a calming effect, helping to reduce anxiety and improve focus during high-pressure situations.

  • Support for Hoof Health

PEMF therapy can also promote healthy hoof growth by improving blood flow to the hooves. This is particularly beneficial for horses with hoof-related issues, such as laminitis and abscesses.

  • Joint Health

For horses suffering from joint issues, PEMF can reduce inflammation and improve mobility, making it a valuable tool for maintaining joint health.

  • Immune System Support

A strong immune system is crucial for equine health. PEMF therapy may enhance immune function, helping horses better fight off infections and illnesses.

  • Cellular Detoxification

PEMF aids in the detoxification process at the cellular level, helping to eliminate toxins and improve overall health.

  • Improved Range of Motion

By relaxing muscles and reducing stiffness, PEMF can enhance a horse’s range of motion, benefiting both performance and daily activities.

  • Wound Healing

PEMF has been shown to accelerate the healing process for cuts, abrasions, and other wounds, promoting faster recovery.

  • Management of Laminitis

For horses suffering from laminitis, PEMF therapy can reduce inflammation and improve circulation, helping to manage this painful condition.

  • Support for Breathing Issues

PEMF therapy may assist in alleviating respiratory problems by promoting better oxygenation of the blood, which is essential for overall health.

  • Pain Management in Acute Injuries

In cases of acute injuries, PEMF can effectively manage pain, allowing horses to recover more comfortably.

  • Faster Bone Healing

PEMF can stimulate bone regeneration, making it valuable for horses recovering from fractures or surgeries involving bone.

  • Increased Energy Levels

Many owners report that their horses exhibit increased energy and vitality after PEMF treatments, potentially due to improved cellular function.

  • Improved Digestive Health

PEMF may support digestive function by enhancing blood flow to the digestive tract, aiding in nutrient absorption.

  • Support for Older Horses

Senior horses can benefit from improved mobility, pain relief, and overall comfort, enhancing their quality of life.

  • Better Skin Health

PEMF can enhance skin health by improving circulation and supporting healing in cases of dermatitis or other skin conditions.

  • Reduction of Inflammatory Conditions

Beyond joint pain, PEMF can help with other inflammatory conditions throughout the body, reducing overall discomfort.

  • Support during Rehabilitation

For horses undergoing physical therapy or rehabilitation, PEMF can complement traditional treatments, enhancing overall recovery efforts.

  • Aid in Muscle Recovery Post-Exercise

After intense workouts, PEMF can help reduce muscle soreness and fatigue, promoting faster recovery times.

  • Reduction of Swelling

PEMF can help reduce swelling from injuries or conditions such as lymphangitis, promoting comfort and healing.

While these benefits are supported by various studies, it is important for horse owners to consult with veterinarians or equine health professionals to determine the appropriateness of PEMF therapy for their specific needs. As with any treatment, individual results can vary, and ongoing research continues to explore the full potential of PEMF in equine health.
